Description

For the past 29 years, Chuck has made his living carving ancient ivory and bone. He first hitchhiked to Alaska in 1971 at the age of 17. Around that time, he developed an interest in sculpture while working in bronze foundries in his hometown of Prescott, Arizona. He began carving old walrus ivory, and by the late 1980s, he was also buying, selling, and carving mammoth tusks and ivory. Today, Chuck works with fossil whale bone, mammoth ivory, and mammoth teeth, sourcing his materials from remote native villages. He feels blessed to have been able to raise a large family by working with his hands.

About ten years ago, Chuck developed a process for preserving mammoth teeth. He also enjoys turning lidded vessels from ivory and bone, and he looks forward to getting to know fellow artists through this forum.
